South Dakota Soybean Stories: Jason Frerichs

Jason Frerichs

Jason Frerichs, fourth generation family farmer based in Wilmot, SD.

Jason Frerichs always knew his passion for livestock would lead him back to the farm. As the fourth generation of his family farm, he runs his own operation, but his entire family is involved in some shape or form. From his daughter, Elizabeth (5), who helps with cattle chores, to his brother, Aaron, who operates on the neighboring farmland and handles the crop and input planning aspects of their farms.

“We certainly are a family farm operation to the fullest extent” — Jason Frerichs.

Family farming at its finest — Jason’s father, Kent, and daughter, Elizabeth, share a candid moment while helping with cattle chores.

At SDSU, his passion for animal husbandry in livestock production led him to minor in Animal Science. He then went on to work as an ag teacher and even served in the SD Legislature for some time. But ultimately, he returned to the farm and now serves as the Chairman of the SD Soybean Research & Promotion Council.

Generations of Frerichs farms fueled Jason’s passion for the land, his community, and animal husbandry. And when he thinks about the future of agriculture, he has a positive outlook knowing that the industry has been and will continue to innovate in order to meet the needs of our growing population as efficiently as possible.
