South Dakota Soybean Stories: Bruce Haines

Bruce Haines with wife, Marlene Haines

Bruce Haines is a soybean farmer from Mitchell, South Dakota. He currently serves as the Director for District One on the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council. In this role, he works to promote soy innovations that create new markets and uses for soy, all the while creating less waste and improving the sustainability of the product.

Bruce's path to farming wasn't paved with ease. In 1986, when the farm economy hit another rough patch, Bruce seized an opportunity to join McDonald's restaurants. Little did he know that this experience would shape his perspective on the interconnectedness of farming and the food industry.

Bruce's commitment to sustainability goes beyond his role at McDonald's. As a soybean farmer, he actively promotes innovations that create new markets and reduce waste, contributing to the overall sustainability of soy products. He emphasizes the importance of leaving the land better than found, recognizing that sustainability is built on giving back to Mother Nature and enhancing soil health.

Bruce Haines' story is one of resilience, sustainability, and a deep-rooted love for the American way of life, as he says,

“Farming is the greatest way to live an American life”.

His journey from the challenges of the 1980s to his role as a leader in the soybean industry is an inspiration for the next generation of farmers, encouraging them to sow the seeds of a sustainable and prosperous future.
