DIY Soy-Based Playdough

With school out for the summer, finding activities for the kids to do at home can be challenging and spendy. For a fun activity with ingredients that you more than likely already have at home, follow this simple DIY playdough recipe! All you will need is flour, salt, kool-aid powder, water, and vegetable oil. The best part about this recipe is that it is soy-based! Did you know that vegetable oil is made from soybeans? We tried this recipe out at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota during Agriculture Week and it was a hit!

First, mix all of your dry ingredients. If Kool-Aid powder is all that you are missing - no worries. Kool-Aid adds a fun color to the playdough, but so can any other powder-based beverage – think lemonade – or food coloring. Adding none will leave you with white playdough that is just as fun!

Next, stir in your water and vegetable oil, then knead your dough until the playdough is fully formed. If your dough is feeling a little sticky, add some more flour. If your dough is dry and cracking, just add a little bit more water. Simple as that! Once your playdough is all formed, it is ready to be played with. Enjoy!
