Creating homemade candles

When winter sets in and the chilly air (or the unavoidable snow days) keeps us indoors, it's the perfect time to get creative with DIY projects. And what better way to make the most of being inside than starting a new project?

Soybeans are known for their versatility, and they offer some amazing DIY possibilities for cozy winter days. From soothing soy wax candles to nourishing soy oil beauty products, these projects will help you stay productive all season long. And, if you have kids at home, there’s a fun addition to the list: soy-based playdough that will keep little hands busy for hours.

1. Make Your Own Soy Wax Candles

DIY Soy-based candles

Nothing says cozy like the flicker of a candle. Soy wax candles are an excellent choice for a DIY project because they burn cleaner than traditional candles. Plus, soy wax is easy to work with, making it ideal for first-time candle makers.

What You’ll Need:

  • Soy wax flakes

  • Candle Wicks

  • Essential oils (for scent)

  • A glass jar

  • Double-sided tape

Instructions:

  1. Measure a piece of wick that’s 4 inches taller than your glass jar. Tie a knot on one end of the wick. Place a piece of double-sided tape at the bottom of the glass jar and then stick the knot to the tape. Use the wooden skewer to push the knot firmly onto the tape.

  2. Melt the soy wax in a saucepan over medium heat. You can also melt the wax in a microwave-safe container. Heat it in 1-minute intervals in the microwave. Stir occasionally until smooth and completely melted.

  3. Take the wax off the heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Once the wax has cooled, mix in your preferred essential oil and stir. Add 4 drops per cup of melted wax.

  4. Pour the wax into your glass container, leaving an inch of room at the top.

  5. Wrap the wick around a wooden skewer. Then, place the skewer across the glass jar. This will keep the wick centered while the wax dries.

  6. Once the wax has cooled completely, trim the wick so only an inch remains at the top.

2. DIY Charcuterie Board with Soy Oil Finish

Charcuterie boards are not just for summer gatherings. They’re perfect for cozying up with your favorite snacks during winter, too. Making your own wooden board and finishing it with soy oil is an easy project. It also lets you add a personal touch to your hosting items.

What You’ll Need:

  • Wooden board (such as walnut or maple)

  • Sandpaper (fine grit)

  • Soy oil (for a food-safe finish)

  • Cloth

Instructions:

  1. Sand your wooden board until smooth.

  2. Clean off any dust and apply a thin layer of soy oil with a cloth.

  3. Let the oil soak in for a few hours, then wipe off any excess.

  4. Repeat as needed for a polished, food-safe finish that makes your board durable and easy to clean.
